We made some big progress this week. My wife was kind enough to let me work a couple hours Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings getting the majority of the frame welds finished and polished up. So last night Gary and I got the rear axle put together and on the frame. Man this is sweet! The rear baring kit a bought online with the rest of the go kart parts made it so nice to put together with all the brackets and bolts. We also fabricated the axle out of 1″ steel bar with an 1/8th inch side wall. To attach the “Sears Special” lawn tractor tires off of the lawn mower we welded two 3/4″ x 10″ bolts (with the hex head cut off) sitting inside the axle on either end. So tires won’t spin on the axle, we had to grind a keyway in the bolt shaft for the key to sit in. Now we have a threaded end to securely tighten the wheels to the axle. The next things to work on is mounting the engine, finishing the front end in conjunction with designing and lengthening the front wheel base.
